Or just haven't paid enough attention to some of the things Gamers and Anime fans have been muttering about recently.
You may have heard of Katawa Shoujo (Literal Translation: Cripple Girl)
A Japanese style Visual Novel/Dating Sim developed and produced entirely by a multinational team of amateurs.
Don't let the fact that the team initially brainstormed and collaborated on 4chan's /a board.
And don't think it's a Dating Sim with Hentai scenes catering to the Fetish of 'Banging Disabled Girls"
Because that isn't what it's about.
It's story feels honest and genuine. The characters believable, and the few sex scenes (Let's be honest with ourselves here, they're high school students in love, of course there's going to be sex involved) can be removed through options in the games menu and you wouldn't even know they were missing from the story.
The artwork suits the style of game play well in my opinion, the choice of background images and the soften and blur filters applied fit each scenario to a tea.
I find the game a refreshing detour from what one would normally expect of the 'Dating Sim/Visual Novel' genre.
While not confronting, the game will make you ask yourself some serious questions on how you perceive yourself and others, especially if they have a physical disability.
This is one of those rare games that affected me emotionally. I'm not talking about raging in frustration, or finishing it with a sense of accomplishment (Or emptiness). I actually feel connected to the characters. (And I'm not too proud to admit that I actually have been walking around lately in a giddy state of slight euphoria. The kind that one gets when they're in love, sickening I know. But for a fictional character to create those kinds of emotions in one who's normally rational and analytical as myself, well that's quite an accomplishment.)

This is the first visual novel I've played and I'm only a few hours in (the only nudity I've seen has been of your misogynistic conspiracy nut dorm-mate) but I find it really funny, well written, compelling and (in spite of the portrayed disabilities) disarmingly cute. If you're on the fence about whether or not to get this (BTW it's FREE), you've got nothing to lose so give it a try! Also for those that don't to play it for fear of seeing an R-rated scene involving what would be interpreted as an overly vulnerable girl you can turn off such content in the menu.

I saw this article on an assistive robot made by Hitachi called EMIEW2 (see here)

As soon as I saw it I knew that someone at Hitachi is a fan of the catian assist-a-roids in the nekomimi anime series "Asobi ni Iku Yo" (see picture).

Does anyone else have similar examples of large companies or everyday groups using images or items from or inspired by Nekomimi type media/culture?
