AKS74U is the shortened version if the AK74, but yeah, it nearly looks like a pistol without the flash hider and folding stock.

I meant that for a carbine is is very short, similar in length closer to a MP5 than M4 in barrel length. I would expect anything with a sub 300mm barrel to fire pistol rounds.

Well, due to the ballistic nature of 5.45, the AKS74U actually got same effective range as a M4. 5.56 is a high speed low drag round, when you fire it out of a short barrel, it doesn't reach that high a speed and looses its main effect, fragmentation, after around 300-400 meters. 5.45, being a OH GOD WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN HOW DID THIS GET HERE I'M NO GOOD WITH COMPUTERS HELP round, is a mid-speed high drag round. If it travels fast enough to penetrate skin, it travels fast enough to do it's "OH GOD I'M INSIDE A BODY WHAT THE HELL SHOULD I DO" trick and go fuck around with everything, shredding shit like swallowing a handful of razors or something. The M4 is accurate beyond 400 meters, but it's effects at that range is nothing a good shot of amphetamine, a bit of pot or a mouthful of Khat won't negate. A AKS74U is not accurate beyond 350 meters, but out to that range, it will go OH GOD WHAT? inside anyone in front of it's body. Both will kill you dead beyond their effective range, but they'll kill you deader within it.
